Here’s the truth: Mold is all around us. It is in our gardens, our bathrooms, and our refrigerators. It might be in our basements. It might grow on our backyard tree bark or in our foam rubber pillows.

Most of the time mold does not affect us. Some of the time, however, it does. If is of special concern to individuals with under or overdeveloped immune systems (like infants, toddlers and the elderly) and individuals whose immune system have been compromised by medical treatments (like chemo) or illness (like mononucleosis). It can, however, affect us all, especially when there are considerable amounts of it in concentrated areas. And when it does, it can wreak havoc on our immune system, causing flu-like symptoms, allergic reactions, headaches, respiratory problems and chronic fatigue.

Certain types of mold can also cause damage to furnishings, destroy wood and compromise the integrity of a structure.

Responding quickly to suspected mold infestation will reduce structural damage and prevent chronic health problems.

Most insurance policies, unfortunately, no longer cover mold removal. Those that do cover it usually offer a very low level of coverage, rarely enough to cover the cost of its removal. So it is important that you act quickly when mold is suspected and minimize your cost.

MasterCare’s Mold Remediation Process

Evaluation

Certified technicians and/or project managers will evaluate the best course of action using industry standards such as the I.I.C.R.C. S520, New York City Guidelines and E.P.A. Guidelines.

Establish a Plan of Action

After the evaluation, Mastercare will prepare a plan of action, including an action timeline with an expected start and end date.

Containment Set-Up

Upon your approval of the Plan of Action, Mastercare will set up the necessary controls to safeguard against cross contamination (the spreading of mold to other areas). These controls include setting up containments (plastic rooms) and air filtration devices/negative air machines (air scrubbers).

Technician Protection

Technicians will prepare for work with the proper P.P.E. (Personal Protective Equipment) such as respirators, tyvac suits and other items.

Mold Removal Rough Clean

Technicians will enter the containment and remove and bag the building materials that can be removed. Building materials that cannot be removed (i.e.: concrete, wood, steel framing, piping and metal straps) will be sanded, hepa vacuumed and wiped down.

Mold Removal Fine Clean

Technicians will do a second, more careful wipe down of all the areas previously addressed and the entire inside of the containment. This prepares the area for testing by industrial hygienists.

Settling Period

Twelve to twenty-four hours is required for the air filtration devices to capture dust and mold spores that were disturbed and dispersed during the removal of building materials.

Testing

A certified industrial hygienist will test the inside of the containment. The hygienist will perform air and surface sampling tests and compare these with other areas, both inside other non-contaminated parts of the structure and outdoors as well. These samplings are submitted to a lab for testing and will be returned to the hygienist for evaluation and conclusions.
